Chennai, September 22, 2026: IIT Madras has inaugurated a new ₹3.30 crore construction robotics laboratory with support from Bechtel India, creating a dedicated facility for research and development in robotics, automation and construction technology.
The laboratory is intended to give students and researchers a space to build, test and demonstrate robotic and automated systems for construction and infrastructure applications.
The lab will focus on technologies that can be developed and tested for real construction tasks. The collaboration is designed to connect academic research with industry requirements, allowing prototypes and automation concepts to be evaluated before wider deployment.
The initiative also creates a route for students to work on practical construction-technology problems. IIT Madras and Bechtel India say the partnership is expected to support longer-term research and technology development.
Construction robotics sits alongside telematics, machine control, autonomous systems and digital project management as the industry looks for ways to improve productivity and repeatability.
