India’s Wheeled CE Retail Rises 22% in October; JCB Holds 53% Share

India’s wheeled construction equipment retail rose 22.07% to 7,434 units in October, but April–October FY27 growth remained 4.93%, FADA data shows.

India’s wheeled construction equipment retail registrations rose 22.07% year on year to 7,434 units in October 2026, according to the latest data from the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA). Registrations were also 14.62% higher than September’s 6,486 units.

The monthly increase was strong, but the year-to-date picture is more measured. Wheeled construction equipment retail reached 42,184 units between April and October in FY27, up 4.93% from 40,203 units in the same period a year earlier. The figures point to improving activity, but one strong month is not yet evidence of a broad acceleration across the equipment market.

Wheeled construction equipment retail: October 2026 figures

Measure Units Change
October 2026 7,434 +22.07% year on year
September 2026 6,486 October was +14.62% month on month
October 2025 6,090 Year-on-year comparison base
April–October FY27 42,184 +4.93% year on year

FADA released its October vehicle retail data on 6 November. The association described construction equipment as one of the stronger-performing vehicle categories during the month. The October increase also came as the festive calendar shifted: Dhanteras fell on 6 November and Diwali on 8 November in 2026, rather than both falling within October as they did in 2025.

JCB remains the leader, while competitors grow faster

JCB India retained the largest position in the wheeled construction equipment retail market, with 3,942 registrations and a 53.03% share in October. Its volume was about 2% higher than a year earlier, when it registered 3,876 units. Its share was down 10.62 percentage points from 63.65% in October 2025. The movement was not concentrated in October alone: JCB’s share was 53.35% in September 2026, so the month-on-month change was limited.

Several competitors recorded faster year-on-year growth. The manufacturer-wise figures reported from FADA’s retail data are set out below.

Manufacturer October registrations Market share Year-on-year movement
JCB India 3,942 53.03% About +2%
Action Construction Equipment (ACE) 740 9.95% About +57%
Escorts Kubota (Construction Equipment) 552 7.43% About +67%
Ajax Engineering 372 5.00% —
Bull Machines 286 3.85% Nearly three times its year-ago volume
Tata Hitachi 200 2.69% —
Caterpillar India 155 2.09% —
CASE New Holland 145 1.95% —
Doosan Bobcat 108 1.45% About twice its year-ago volume

ACE’s share increased from 7.75% a year earlier, while Escorts Kubota’s rose from 5.42%. Bull Machines registered 286 units compared with 99 a year earlier. Year-on-year growth rates are shown only where reported in the source breakdown; a dash does not mean zero growth.

Equipment Brief analysis: JCB continues to account for more than half of the reported market, but the latest figures show that growth is not being distributed evenly among manufacturers. ACE and Escorts Kubota expanded faster than the market leader in October. The figures are a signal of changing competitive shares within the wheeled-equipment registration pool, not proof of a change in the wider market for every equipment category.

Rural and urban registrations both increased

The October increase was broad across the two market groupings reported by FADA. Rural wheeled construction equipment retail rose 22.16% year on year, while urban retail increased 21.95%. Rural markets accounted for 56.7% of registrations, compared with 43.3% in urban markets. The rural share was lower than September’s 59.1%, indicating a modest shift in the monthly mix rather than a reversal of rural market leadership.

The reported fuel mix also remains heavily weighted towards diesel. Electric vehicles accounted for about 0.1% of wheeled construction equipment retail in October, indicating that electrification is still at an early stage in this segment.

Why the retail data needs to be read carefully

FADA’s figure is for wheeled construction equipment retail registrations. It should not be treated as a count of all construction and mining equipment, OEM factory dispatches, order intake or machines deployed at project sites. The registration series provides a useful view of the wheeled segment, but it does not by itself measure the full equipment market or the utilisation of contractor fleets.

The distinction matters when comparing monthly retail data with industry forecasts. ICRA’s FY27 assessment, covered in Equipment Brief’s report on the mining and construction equipment outlook, refers to overall MCE industry volumes. Its forecast and FADA’s wheeled-equipment retail registrations use different market definitions and should not be compared as if they were the same measure. Retail registrations also represent only the domestic channel; exports are a separate demand stream covered in Equipment Brief’s report on India’s construction-equipment export push.

What equipment manufacturers and fleet buyers should watch

For manufacturers and dealers, the next monthly releases will help establish whether October’s increase is sustained and whether the share gains recorded by ACE, Escorts Kubota and other competitors continue. For fleet owners and contractors, the registration figures are a market indicator, not a substitute for checking local dealer stock, delivery schedules, financing costs, parts availability and machine suitability for the job.

Three indicators will be important through the rest of FY27: the pace of cumulative retail growth, the movement in manufacturer-level market shares, and whether infrastructure and mining project execution translates into sustained equipment purchases. FADA did not provide a separate construction-equipment growth forecast in this release, so the wider dealer outlook should not be read as a segment-specific projection.

Equipment Brief assessment

October’s 22.07% increase is a clear positive signal for India’s wheeled construction equipment market. However, the 4.93% rise in April–October registrations gives a more cautious view of the financial year so far. The more notable development is the faster growth recorded by some competitors while JCB remains the dominant player. The November and December registration data will show whether October marks a sustained improvement or a strong monthly step within a still-moderate FY27 recovery.
