IndianOil Approves ₹2,448.70 Crore Kochi–Thoothukudi Natural Gas Pipeline

IndianOil has approved ₹2,448.70 crore for a 424.65-km natural gas pipeline linking Kochi, Kanyakumari and Thoothukudi in southern India.

Representative natural gas pipeline construction with large pipes and heavy equipment

New Delhi, September 28, 2026: Indian Oil Corporation has approved an investment of ₹2,448.70 crore for development of the Kochi–Kanyakumari–Thoothukudi Natural Gas Pipeline, adding a major transmission project to southern India’s energy-infrastructure pipeline.

The planned system will extend for 424.65 km and has a total capacity of 6.84 million standard cubic metres per day (MMSCMD). Of this, 1.71 MMSCMD is intended as common-carrier capacity.

Pipeline to strengthen southern gas connectivity

The project is intended to strengthen natural-gas connectivity from Kochi towards southern Tamil Nadu, including the Kanyakumari and Thoothukudi corridor. The investment decision was disclosed by IndianOil in a regulatory filing and subsequently reported by major business media.

The project should currently be treated as an approved investment/project. The approval does not by itself establish that all engineering, procurement or construction packages have been tendered or awarded.

Construction and equipment opportunity

Equipment Brief analysis: Long-distance pipeline projects typically involve route preparation, trench excavation, pipe handling, welding, lowering-in, backfilling and specialist crossings. That can create work for excavators, dozers, cranes, generators, compressors, welding systems and specialist trenchless-construction contractors.

Actual equipment requirements for the Kochi–Kanyakumari–Thoothukudi project have not yet been disclosed in a project-wide procurement list, so specific fleet assumptions should wait for tender packages and contractor mobilisation plans.

Why the project matters to contractors

The scale of the approved investment makes the project relevant to pipeline EPC contractors, heavy-equipment rental companies, lifting specialists and suppliers serving energy infrastructure. The next key step will be the conversion of the investment approval into detailed engineering packages, procurement activity and field execution.

For equipment businesses, timing will matter. Demand normally becomes clearer as route packages, crossing works, compressor or station packages and construction schedules move into procurement.

The project also adds another energy-infrastructure layer to India’s wider construction pipeline, which Equipment Brief tracks alongside roads, railways, ports and other major projects in its analysis of equipment demand from mega infrastructure projects.
