Caterpillar’s Cat 253 compact track loader targets grading and material handling. Compare its published specs, hydraulic packages and regional availability before buying.

Caterpillar’s Cat 253 compact track loader is positioned for grading, site preparation and material handling, with a redesigned undercarriage and a rated operating capacity around 2,000 lb. The company’s 7 October 2026 product announcement gives an operating weight of 9,343 lb (4,238 kg) and a rated operating capacity of 2,006 lb (910 kg). Cat’s current compact-track-loader product page lists the same operating weight but shows 2,011 lb (912 kg) at 35% of tipping load, so buyers should confirm the rating on the specification sheet for the exact machine and configuration.
The announcement is labelled for North America. Caterpillar has not confirmed India-specific pricing, dealer availability or a local delivery timetable in the release reviewed for this article.
| Item | Published specification | Buyer note |
|---|---|---|
| Operating weight | 9,343 lb (4,238 kg) | Confirm transport weight with the ordered configuration and attachment. |
| Rated operating capacity | 2,006 lb (910 kg) in Cat’s 7 October release; 2,011 lb (912 kg) at 35% tipping load on Cat’s current product page | Use the current model-specific data sheet and the rating basis when comparing machines. |
| Engine | Cat 3.3B electronically controlled diesel; 72.1 hp (53.8 kW) gross power on Cat’s current product page | Check the applicable regional specification and emissions certification. |
| Tracks | 15 in (380 mm) general-duty C-Pattern tracks | Track choice should suit ground conditions, wear exposure and transport needs. |
| Standard-flow hydraulics | 20 US gpm at 3,336 psi (76 l/min at about 230 bar), standard on canopy models | Match attachment flow and pressure requirements to the machine. |
| High-flow hydraulics | 30 US gpm at 3,336 psi (112 l/min at about 230 bar), standard on cab models in Cat’s announcement | Verify the hydraulic package on the quotation rather than assuming every configuration is identical. |

Caterpillar says the 253 builds on the Cat 259D3 foundation but uses a one-piece undercarriage with four rigid, frame-mounted axles. The company’s product announcement says the design is intended to provide a stable platform for grading and material handling, while the 15-inch C-Pattern tracks increase ground engagement in soft conditions.
The 253 sits between the 249D3 and 255 in Cat’s compact track loader line-up. That position gives contractors another size to evaluate for loading, earthmoving and finish-grading work without moving immediately to a larger machine. The model’s fit should still be judged by the job’s actual lift requirement, attachment package and transport limits—not by rated capacity alone.
Cat lists standard-flow hydraulics for canopy models and high-flow hydraulics for cab models in its October announcement. Buyers should not treat the two figures as interchangeable options on every configuration. A procurement specification should identify the operator station, hydraulic package, coupler and intended work tools together.
The manufacturer also lists dual self-levelling, return-to-dig or work-tool positioner functions, creep-speed control, float mode and a rear-view camera feed on the integrated display. Cat says Product Link Elite captures operating data for remote machine-health monitoring through VisionLink. These are manufacturer-described features; actual fleet value depends on the selected configuration, connectivity and how the contractor uses the data.
Cat identifies grading and material handling as key applications, with the machine also described for site preparation, truck loading and work across gravel, dirt, hard surfaces, turf, snow and unfinished terrain. The tracked layout can be useful where traction and ground contact matter. It does not remove the need to assess ground bearing, turning space, surface protection or transport logistics for the site.
For contractors choosing between compact machines, the work cycle matters. A compact track loader is primarily a carrier for loading, grading and attachment work; an excavator offers digging reach and trenching capability. Equipment Brief’s skid-steer versus mini-excavator guide sets out the basic application trade-offs. For rental fleets, the related rental-versus-ownership guide can help structure the utilisation and cost comparison.
Caterpillar’s October announcement is labelled for North America. Its March 2026 preview had described planned North American commercial availability in the second half of 2026, with expansion to other regions in 2027. That earlier plan is not confirmation of an India launch. Indian contractors should seek written confirmation from an authorised local dealer before including the 253 in a purchase or rental plan.
